You can wear a sweater on its own, but we think they\u2019re even better as middle and outer layers.<\/p>\n<p>Putting a sweater over a button-up shirt is a classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themodestman.com\/smart-casual-style\/\" data-lasso-id=\"5618\">smart casual look<\/a> that isn\u2019t going out of style any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>But no amount of variety in your sweater game is going to make a difference if your sweaters make you look like a swamp-monster. Even ugly Christmas sweaters look great when they fit well.<\/p>\n<p>As you know, the hardest thing about finding the right sweater is getting a great fit for us shorter guys. Nail this critical first step and everything else will go smoothly.<\/p>\n<h3>The Neck<\/h3>\n<p>You want the neck of your sweater to be fairly narrow. Hopefully, you\u2019re familiar with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themodestman.com\/t-shirt-fit-guide\/\" data-lasso-id=\"54221\">how shirts and jackets should fit<\/a> in the shoulders. The seam shouldn\u2019t be ending at the edge of your shoulder muscle. This look is never good, especially for shorter guys.<\/p>\n<h3>The Chest<\/h3>\n<p>How do you like your shirts? Slim fit? Traditional?<\/p>\n<p>Whichever route you choose, you want to hit a balance that looks like it was fitted to your body. Most sweaters are made to be worn over shirts, so you actually want that extra space (just a little).<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re swimming in extra fabric around your arms, wrists, and armpits, you\u2019re fighting a losing battle.<\/p>\n<p>When the fit is right, you won\u2019t find any excess material, and you also won\u2019t see tension lines running horizontally.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, for those of you guys who\u2019ve been pumping iron lately, a few tension lines here and there never hurt anyone.<\/p>\n<h3>The Stomach<\/h3>\n<p>This is the part that gets most of us guys. You have to pay close attention to how your sweater fits around the torso.<\/p>\n<p>Many sweaters have an elastic waistband that cinches in, and if you have extra fabric, you\u2019re looking at major frump-factor. If it\u2019s pressing in, you\u2019re risking that muffin effect we mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s too loose, the hem will be apart from your waist. That\u2019s a hallmark look of an old sweater that\u2019s gone through the wash one too many times or a sweater that just doesn\u2019t fit. If your sweater goes below your fly, you\u2019re inventing a new style and we wish you the best of luck.<\/p>\n<p>In our opinion, that\u2019s far too long. All rights reserved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sweaters adjust themselves throughout the day, so if you\u2019re just hitting mid-fly when you pull your sweater all the way down, chances are it\u2019ll rise up above your waistband when you start moving.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s the case, your sweater is too short, though us shorter guys rarely run into that problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Sweater Sleeves<\/h3>\n<p>Keep the sleeves with just enough room to fit over a shirt, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themodestman.com\/avoid-baggy-clothes\/\" data-lasso-id=\"5623\">stay away from anything you\u2019d consider baggy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The best-fitting sleeve will end right at the wrist. An inch either way isn\u2019t a deal-breaker for any sweater, but anything more than that, and you\u2019ve got the wrong fit.<\/p>\n<p>You certainly don\u2019t want the sleeves to fall on your hands, and if you find yourself folding the sleeves, you\u2019re better off finding another fit. For this look to work, you have to get your fits down perfectly. When you get it, you\u2019ll know you\u2019ve mastered the art of fit.<\/p>\n<p>Either that or Mercury is in retrograde and the groundhog saw its own shadow.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Common_Fit_Problems_for_Shorter_Men\"><\/span>Common Fit Problems for Shorter Men<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When you go into the mall, you\u2019ll see that every major retailer makes men\u2019s sweaters. So what do you do when you\u2019re designing a line of clothing that\u2019s meant to fit over 300 million people?<\/p>\n<p><em>You just take the average build and cater to it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The average guy in the US is 5\u20199\u201d and 195lbs. If that sounds like you, then walk into any retail store and pick up as many sweaters as you want. All rights reserved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tailoring knitwear is notoriously difficult to do, so while getting your threads trimmed up is a good option with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themodestman.com\/minimalist-mens-shirt-collection\/\" data-lasso-id=\"54231\">shirts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themodestman.com\/minimalist-pants-collection\/\" data-lasso-id=\"54232\">pants<\/a>, your sweater is a different story.<\/p>\n<p>Us short guys usually run into these problems when trying on sweaters:<\/p>\n<h3>The Sleeves Are Too Long<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s no covering this one up. It\u2019s better to get the right fit out of the gate.<\/p>\n<h3>The Torso Is Too Long<\/h3>\n<p>You can ignore the warning signs all you want, but if the torso is too long, extra fabric will just pool up around your waist. This just adds visual pounds to your frame when a great fit actually slims your profile down.<\/p>\n<p>Many tailors won\u2019t even attempt to hem up a sweater\u2019s length, no matter how much cash you wave at them (well, that\u2019s not true&#8212;but it depends on how much cash you\u2019ve got).<\/p>\n<h3>The Shoulders Are Too Wide<\/h3>\n<p>Again, when the shoulders are too wide, you\u2019re running into that \u201chand-me-down\u201d territory. Even if people don\u2019t consciously notice, it\u2019s harder to give someone full respect when they\u2019re wearing something that makes them look like a kid.<\/p>\n<p>When the shoulders are too big, the whole fit is off.
